Trading company or factory? How to tell in Guangzhou

You met them at the fair. Beautiful booth, samples everywhere, business card says "Manufacturing Co., Ltd." Or you found them online — factory photos, production videos, "20 years OEM experience."

In Guangzhou, roughly half the companies presenting themselves this way don't own a factory. They're trading companies — and everything you saw belongs to someone else.

First: trading companies aren't the enemy

Let's be fair. A good trading company earns its margin: they consolidate small orders across factories, handle export paperwork, manage products one factory can't make alone. For small quantities across many product types, a trader can genuinely be the right choice.

The problem isn't traders. The problem is traders pretending to be factories — because that lie costs you 15–30% in hidden markup, and much worse: when there's a quality problem, you discover you have no idea who actually made your goods, no relationship with them, and no leverage. Your "manufacturer" is a middleman sending your angry emails to a factory that's never heard your name.

Why Guangzhou specifically breeds this

Geography. Guangzhou is the trading front door of the Pearl River Delta — the fairs are here, the wholesale markets are here, the export offices are here. The production is mostly around here: furniture in Foshan, electronics in Dongguan, hardware in Zhongshan. A company with an office tower address in Tianhe and a "our factory" photo album is often selling you Dongguan production with a Guangzhou markup.

The booth you loved at the fair? Booths are rented by the square meter. The samples are real. Whose production line they came from is the actual question.

The tells — what we look for

1. The business scope on the license. Every Chinese company's registration states what it's licensed to do. A real manufacturer's scope says production. A trader's says "wholesale, import and export, trading." They'll show you a factory video; the license shows you the truth. This is public record — if you know where to pull it and can read it.

2. The address math. Registered address in an office tower + "factory" 80km away in another city = at minimum, a serious question. Sometimes it's legitimate (sales office + real owned plant). Often it's not. The only way to know: someone stands at both addresses.

3. The catalog spread. A factory is deep and narrow — one product family, many variations, because that's what their machines make. A catalog offering LED lights, silicone kitchenware, and pet toys is a trader. Machines don't work that way.

4. Technical questions past the second layer. Ask about tooling, cycle times, material sourcing, which processes are in-house vs. subcontracted. A factory answers from memory. A trader says "let me check with our engineer" — and the answer comes back tomorrow, in suspiciously perfect English.

The one-question test: "When I visit, can we walk the production line for my product?" A factory names the workshop and picks a date. A trader offers to meet you at the office, the showroom, or a very nice restaurant first. The hesitation is the answer.

What this costs you if you get it wrong

It's not just margin. When you order from a disguised trader: you can't verify working conditions or materials at the real source — a growing problem now that U.S. customs cross-checks who actually made your goods. You can't fix quality at the line, because you don't know where the line is. And your contract names a company that never touched your product — good luck enforcing that.

Pull the real license and read the business scope. Match the registered address against the claimed factory. Check the catalog logic. Ask questions only a production floor can answer.
